[Abk. für Post Office Protocol 3, dt. »drittes Protokoll für das (E-Mail-)Postamt«], ein Übertragungsprotokoll, welches das Abrufen von E-Mails erlaubt, ohne dass man dazu einen eigenen E-Mail-Server betreiben muss. Mit den in POP3 enthaltenen Befehlen kann man elektronische Post vom Server herunterladen, sich dort gelagerte E-Mails anzeigen lassen sowie ungewünschte Zusendungen direkt am Server löschen. Eine vollständige Verwaltung des E-Mail-Accounts (z. B. Anlegen von Unterverzeichnissen) ist mittels POP3 nicht möglich. Daher lässt sich eine E-Mail-Abfrage per POP3 mit einem Gang zum Postamt vergleichen, während das Protokoll IMAP dem Betrieb eines »eigenen Postamts« nahe kommt. POP3 wurde im Mai 1996 von J. Myers und M. Rose als RFC 1939 veröffentlicht (IETF).
